Why Make Matcha at Home?

Making matcha yourself not only ensures freshness but also allows you to customize the flavor and strength to your liking. Most cafes (yes, including one that rhymes with marbucks) do not use high quality matcha or the best techniques. Plus, it can just be a nice little ritual that promotes mindfulness and relaxation. So, let's get into it!

Step 1 - Choosing the Right Matcha

The quality of your matcha significantly impacts its taste and health benefits. Look for ceremonial grade matcha, which is high-quality and bright green in color. It should have a smooth texture and a fresh aroma. Here is my favorite high-quality matcha. I use this every single day and even subscribed to their auto-shipping.

Step 2 - Equipment You'll Need

To prepare matcha, you'll need:

Step 3 - Measuring the Matcha

Using the bamboo scoop or a teaspoon, measure out approximately 1 teaspoon (about 2 grams) of matcha powder into your sieve. Sift the matcha into your matcha bowl to ensure there are no clumps.

Step 4 - Heating Water to the Right Temperature

Heat fresh, filtered water to about 175°F (80°C). This temperature is optimal for matcha to maintain its flavor without becoming bitter.

Step 5 - Preparing the Matcha

Pour a small amount of hot water (about 2 ounces or 60 milliliters) into the matcha bowl. Using the bamboo whisk, whisk the matcha briskly in a "W" or "M" motion until it forms a smooth, frothy liquid.

Step 6 - Whisking Technique

Whisking matcha is an art! Hold the matcha whisk lightly and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until the mixture is frothy and slightly bubbly on the surface.

Step 7 - Enjoy Your Perfect Cup of Matcha

Once frothy, your matcha is ready to drink!

Tips for the Perfect Cup of Matcha:

  • Use fresh, high-quality matcha for the best taste and health benefits.

  • Adjust the amount of matcha powder and water to suit your personal taste preferences.

  • Experiment with different whisking techniques for the ideal frothiness.

  • Incorporate matcha into recipes like smoothies, lattes, or baked goods for variety!

Mastering the art of making matcha at home is not only rewarding but also a fun journey into the world of Japanese tea culture. With these steps and tips, you can up your matcha game and enjoy its numerous health benefits right from your kitchen.
